First Aid Hero of the Month: Calm in the Classrooms

Real story shared by Thomas, Tasmanian local and St John first aid graduate.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, even during an ordinary school day.

For this month’s First Aid Hero, a Tasmanian teacher, quick thinking and first aid training turned a frightening moment into an example of calm, confident care.

A Sudden Emergency in Class

It was a regular morning when the classroom suddenly fell silent. One of his students had collapsed mid-activity, their body stiffening as their arms and legs began to convulse uncontrollably.

Recognising the signs of a seizure, he immediately moved into action. He quickly cleared nearby desks and chairs to prevent injury and instructed the rest of the class to step outside, reassuring them that their friend would be okay.

Calm Action When Every Second Counts

He carefully turned the student onto their side in the recovery position, ensuring their airway stayed open and clear. Their breathing was laboured but steady. Staying composed, he spoke softly and reassuringly, providing calm in the midst of panic.

An ambulance was called, and emergency services guided him through the next steps until paramedics arrived. His actions ensured the student remained safe throughout the seizure and recovery.

Supporting His Students

Once the paramedics had taken over, he turned his attention to the rest of the class. Some students were visibly shaken, and many had never witnessed a seizure before. He gathered them together, explained what had happened, offered reassurance, and directed them to school support services if they needed to talk.

His empathy and leadership helped his students process the experience and learn that emergencies can be handled with confidence and care.

Why First Aid Training Matters

Reflecting on the event, he shared that he was grateful for his first aid training. It gave him the knowledge and composure to act quickly, protect his students, and stay calm under pressure.

His story is a powerful reminder that first aid isn’t only about medical skills — it’s about leadership, confidence, and being ready to step up when others need you most.
