Safe Town Initiative

Making Your Town Safer, Together

St John Tasmania is bringing the Safe Town Initiative to communities across the state, starting with Tasmania’s East Coast this March.

Join us in strengthening safety, preparedness and support for older Tasmanians.

What is St John Safe Town?

St John Safe Town is a statewide community initiative designed to improve first aid readiness, mobility safety and emergency preparedness across Tasmania.

We work alongside local residents, businesses and community groups to deliver practical, hands-on support that helps people stay safe, confident and independent.

This is not just about first aid kits and AEDs. It is about building safer communities together.

Why Safe Town Matters

Tasmania’s regional communities have a higher proportion of older residents than the national average, with more than one in four people aged 60 and over in many East Coast towns.

Falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation for older Australians.

Research commissioned by St John Ambulance has revealed:

  • 34% of Australians do not have a first aid kit at home
  • 46% of car kits have not been checked in over a year

Preparedness cannot be assumed.
Safe Town helps communities take ownership of their safety.
