Motorcycle Trauma First Aid: A Course for Tasmanian Riders

Tasmania’s winding roads and stunning landscapes make it a motorcyclist’s paradise. However, the island’s unique terrain also presents challenges for riders, particularly in emergencies. To address this, St John Ambulance Tasmania has introduced the Motorcycle Trauma First Aid course, tailored specifically for motorcyclists.

Why Motorcycle Trauma First Aid Matters in Tasmania

Tasmania’s remote and rugged environment often means emergency services can take longer to arrive at accident scenes. This course equips riders with the essential skills to respond effectively to motorcycle-related incidents, bridging the gap until help arrives.

Key skills taught include:

  • Scene Management: Ensuring safety for all involved at the site of an accident.
  • Triage and Assessment: Quickly identifying life-threatening injuries.
  • Bleeding Control: Using tourniquets and trauma dressings effectively.
  • Spinal Injury Protocols: Preventing further injury while assisting the rider.
  • Helmet Removal: Knowing when and how to safely remove a helmet.

These practical, motorcycle-specific skills can make a life-saving difference in critical moments.

Designed for Riders, with Riders

This course has been developed over 12 months by Anne Burrows and the team at St John Ambulance Tasmania. To ensure its relevance, local motorcycling experts were invited to trial the training and provide feedback. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting its practical application and community value.

One rider shared, “It’s refreshing to have information tailored to motorbike incidents. The scenarios were realistic and gave us confidence to respond in real-life situations.”
