274 little lifesavers kicked off the year by learning how to help in an emergency

Throughout January, families across Tasmania joined our First Aid for Kids Holiday Program, where children explored real-world skills in a fun and supportive environment.

From calling for help to practising CPR, each session was filled with curiosity, energy and moments of genuine pride. Whether they were just starting their first aid journey or building on what they had learned before, every child left with greater confidence and practical knowledge.

Curious minds, focused eyes: learning how to recognise danger and call for help

Each session began with children gathered in a circle, listening closely as our trainers introduced key first aid concepts. From recognising danger to knowing when and how to call 000, the sessions used simple language, real-life examples, and friendly discussion to help children connect with the material. Their focused expressions and thoughtful questions showed just how eager they were to learn how to help in an emergency.

Pet first aid: learning to care for others through pretend play

Using real bandages, kids practised helping their favourite toy patients, from wrapping teddy bear legs to gently applying plasters on plush animals. This playful activity gave them their first taste of responsibility and compassion. As they worked carefully and proudly showed their results, it became clear they were learning more than just technique. They were learning how to care.

Ambulance tour: stepping into the real world of emergency response

One of the most exciting parts of the day was exploring a real ambulance. Kids climbed in, asked questions, and learned about the equipment and how it's used during emergencies.

Trainers explained each tool and its purpose, helping kids see how the lessons they’d learned could apply in the real world. It brought first aid to life and sparked big dreams in little minds.

Learning together as a family: a shared experience that lasts

Throughout the sessions, parents and carers were encouraged to join in. Some helped with activities, others listened and learned alongside their children. This shared experience deepened understanding and helped families build confidence together. It created stronger connections and shared knowledge that could one day make a real difference.

Moments like this show how learning first aid can bring families even closer.

Generations of Care

A grandfather gently supports his granddaughter as they bandage a toy patient. It’s a beautiful example of intergenerational learning and care in action.

Side-by-Side Support

A parent sits beside their child, offering quiet encouragement as they take in new skills. First aid becomes even more powerful when families learn side by side.
