St John Delivers Life-Saving Boost for At-Risk Youth

df
A Hobart youth accommodation service has received a life-saving automated external defibrillator (AED) through St John Ambulance Tasmania’s Safer Communities Grant Program, strengthening emergency preparedness for some of Tasmania’s most vulnerable young people.

This round of funding supported a youth accommodation service operated by Home Base, recognising the vital role it plays in providing safe and stable environments for young people experiencing crisis. Many young people supported by the service face complex trauma, mental health challenges, disability and underlying medical conditions, where medical emergencies can arise without warning.

The installation of an AED on site ensures immediate access to critical emergency equipment, providing an added layer of protection for both residents and staff. In time-critical cardiac emergencies, early defibrillation can significantly improve survival outcomes, making access to an AED a crucial safeguard in high-risk environments.

St John Ambulance Tasmania CEO Matt Brocklehurst said supporting frontline youth services with life-saving equipment is particularly important during periods of heightened demand.

“No single organisation can meet every need alone, especially at times of year when pressure on community services increases,” Mr Brocklehurst said.

“By equipping services like Home Base with essential emergency equipment, St John is supporting the organisations that care for Tasmania’s most vulnerable young people every day of the year. Access to an AED means staff are better prepared to respond if the unthinkable happens, and that readiness can save lives.”

The Safer Communities Grant Program supports organisations across Tasmania by improving access to life-saving equipment and resources in communities where the need is greatest.
