Why young people should consider volunteering

Youth members

Recent research by the Monash Centre for Youth Policy and Education Practice has shed light on the powerful benefits of volunteering for young people, particularly in addressing anxiety and enhancing wellbeing. This research highlights the importance of engaging youth in volunteer activities, not only for the betterment of the community but also for their personal development. At St John Ambulance Tasmania, we believe that young people are the future of our organisation and the broader community. As Australia faces a decline in volunteerism, engaging the youth has never been more critical. Here are several compelling reasons why young people should consider volunteering with us.

Addressing Anxiety and Enhancing Wellbeing

The research highlights a fascinating link between volunteering, anxiety, and wellbeing. Young people today face unprecedented levels of political and social anxiety. Volunteering provides an outlet for these concerns, offering a constructive way to channel anxiety into positive action. Those who volunteer frequently report better mental health and higher life satisfaction. By volunteering with St John Ambulance Tasmania, young people can not only help others but also improve their own mental wellbeing.

Expanding Horizons and Learning New Skills

Volunteering with St John Ambulance Tasmania offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of fields, from first aid and emergency response to community health education. These experiences can be invaluable for young people, providing practical skills that enhance their resumes and boost employability. Moreover, the sense of accomplishment and the skills acquired through volunteering can increase self-confidence and provide a solid foundation for future career aspirations.

Building a Sense of Community

Volunteering fosters a strong sense of community and belonging. At St John Ambulance Tasmania, young volunteers become part of a supportive network dedicated to making a difference. This sense of belonging is particularly important in today’s digital age, where face-to-face interactions are often limited. By engaging in volunteer activities, young people can form lasting friendships and professional connections that extend beyond their immediate social circles.

Making a Tangible Impact

Young people today are deeply concerned about social and political issues and are eager to make a difference. Volunteering with St John Ambulance Tasmania provides a direct way to contribute to the health and safety of the community. Whether it’s delivering first aid training, supporting community events, or participating in emergency response efforts, every volunteer action has a tangible impact. This not only helps those in need but also gives young volunteers a sense of agency and purpose.
